When Alexander Rybak competed in the Norwegian "Idol" in 2005, he went out when 50 participants remained. "Idol" judge recommended rather stand-up, with a little singing sometimes - for Norway's new international star. A poor judgement of gigantic proportions in light of the superior Eurovision victory. But "Idol" judge has not changed his meaning. "I withhold that he is not a good vocalist," he says to Norwegian newspaper Verdens Gang.
Rybak at the gym 2006. Three hours a week, he put the violin aside and worked as a fitness instructor. The same year he won the talent contest "Kjempesjansen.
Bullied as a child, weeping from the pressure from parents. Idol in Record Victory in Eurovision 2009
Four years ago he was slaughtered by the "Idol"- jury.
Now, Mr Rybak, 23, got his revenge.
So here's what happened when the bullied refugee boy became a world star.
When Alexander Rybak took home the victory in Moscow sat presenter Tor Milde, also known as "Bad -Tor", and probably cursed himself. The "Idol" judge-made Norwegian music industry's all time greatest misjudgment when he dumped Rybak voice in the Norwegian "Idol" in 2005 and invited him to become a comedian:
- Stand-up with some singing from time to time is, what I recommended for you.
Parents Igor, 54, and Natasha, 49, has always assumed that their son would become a world star. But the trip to Moscow has been slow. It started in the Belarusian capital, where his father was a violinist in Minsk Chamber Orchestra. The mother was a pianist.
In the late eighties Igor Rybak went on tour to Norway. There, with the secret security in his shadow, he decided to jump off.
Behind the Iron Curtain at home in Belarus waited his wife Natasha and three year old Alexander for the right time to follow .
When the family finally was reunited in the small community Nesodden outside Oslo, the boy was five years old and became bullied really hard.
- There was very much pressure from my parents. It's not exactly uncommon in Russia, said Alexander Rybak in a documentary in NRK.
Three hours a day practicing on his violin and piano - supervised by two parents who decided that their son would become a star.
- But when I discovered that all the other children not practiced at least three hours every day, I felt a bit cheated.
- Getting to Norway was a very big change for Mom and Dad. Here they were suddenly aware, that children should be allowed to play.
"My first love"
When Alexander was crying and did not want to play more, he was muted with toys from Lego - a recipe for success, it would turn out.
2004, he won the Anders Jahres price for young artists. Since he was already a promising violinist and leader of the Youth Symphony of the Mountains.
But Alexander has also said that he was an odd figure in Nesodden.
He was bullied because he just sat at home and played and had difficulty making friends. But at Barrat Dues Music Institute in Oslo, he met Ingrid Bergman Mehus, 21.
They broke up five years ago, but apparently Alexander found it difficult to forget her.
A few days ago he revealed that it is her, 'Fairytale' is about.
- Alexander was my first love, "says Ingrid in an interview, but stresses that she is engaged to another today.
Won the talent competition
After being voted out of "Idol," with 50 contestants left, Alexander tried again on the television program "Kjempesjansen" in which he won with a self-composed jazzsong. Suddenly, the offers started rolling in and soon came the film roles, model offerings and musical for Alexander who between them managed to
wander around the countryside and play for food and shelter.
When he yesterday landed at Gardermoen, 17 May , he was received by thousands of Norwegians who praised the new national hero. And despite the fact that Ingrid Bergman Mehus is away promised to another, he solves it all right with love also. Facebook group "Mothers of Alexander Rybak as son in law" has a constant influx of members - and the ex-girlfriend says this:
- Alexander will find the right one soon enough. He is a "flirt and charmer".
But Tor Milde then, what does he think today?
- I hold to what I said, that he is not a good vocalist, "he told Verdens Gang.
In this, " Bad-Tor" is quite alone. Millions of Europeans have a new idol.
Alexander Rybak won Eurovision with the highest score in the competition's history.
