A telephone interview for the radio “BBC Russia” with a host Seva Novgorodcev, 10.07.09.

Host: Today in Vitebsk Slavyanski Bazar starts. Alexander Rybak – the winner of ESC 2009 – will perform at an opening show. Alexander Rybak is a Norwegian but his roots are in Belarus. We called him today and asked him where his parents are now. Are they with him in Belarus on Slavyanski Bazar?
Alex: They went on tour. Now papa is going around Europe. I think that he plays (a violin) on streets for money as he does every summer. Because this is interesting for him. And mama is now with a grandmother who is visiting us in Norway.
Host: Could you clarify it a bit about your father. He has graduated a conservatoire; is he an employee of the Royal Opera or…?
Alex: No, he played in Minsk’s chamber orchestra.
Host: And in Norway he was a violinist too?
Alex: Yes, in Norway he worked in an opera and now he works as a teacher.
Host: And you’ve said that he plays in streets for money; that this is interesting for him.
Alex: Yes.
Host: How does it look like?
Alex: Well, when I was very little I was with him there and people threw a lot of money. Surely it’s was much easier when he had a kid with him. But, anyway, he just likes to play for people. And fresh air.
Host: Yes. An adult man comes out, puts down a hat – and you were a little boy then – and he starts to play masterly to passersby.
Alex: Yes. And he sings too.
Host: Yeah?
Alex: Yes.
Host: And everybody in complete astonishment starts to throw large notes to a hat.
Alex: Well, not everybody starts to throw but everybody is in astonishment :)
Host: It is astonishing to me too. Because I know your father – I’ve red his biography - as a man of high musical culture. And suddenly it’s such a confession. So, this is just interesting for him, you think?
Alex: Yes.
Host: You have no right to come out of home without a pen :) Because as soon as you come out you are asked for an autograph.
Alex: Yes, but I like it very much, you know. Everybody asks me – why do you want to… it’s not necessary for you to come out to a crowd and to sign autographs. But I feel that it is not like I have to do this but it is a pleasure to me. Especially after concerts. After concerts I never get tired. On the contrary, I always want to meet people and to sign autographs. Especially when I’m in Norway; there are a lot of children in my audience there. They smile so sincerely and embrace me and this is very-very pleasantly.
Host: I think you’ve inherited this from your father. As he goes to people to play a violin with a hat…
Alex: Yes, he likes to communicate very much. He likes children very much too. He writes a lot (of music) for children orchestras. I like to write for orchestras very much too.
Host: So, do you write too?
Alex: Yes. Of course. I know that in 4-5 years I will not be such a big star as now, of course. So I need to become a composer then. I hope that people understand that I am not just an artist but I am a composer. I have written my song myself.
Host: If you will be writing successful songs and performing them then it will be a career for ages. Like the one Bob Dilan has, for example.
Alex: Well, it would be good, of course. But I want to do this and that. I want to travel around, to flirt with girls. But maybe when I will get married and will move to a house at the nature – then it will be difficult to combine it with going on tours.
Host: You have come to Belarus where you were born. Do you have a feeling that this is your land, your people, native language?
Alex: Yes, very. I feel – how to say this – I feel like I am a child again.
Host: Great. Alexander, it was very interesting. I wish you all the success.
Alex: Thank you very much. Have a nice day.
