Alexander Rybak (or Аляксандр Ігаравіч Рыбак which is his real name) (born 13.05.86) is a norwegian/russian/soviet/belarussian fairytale-figure. He is best known for playing the fiddle and sing at the same time, and for blowing Tone Damli Aaberge and other participants in the Norwegian final of the Eurovision Song Contest off the stage.

YOUNGER YEARS
Although there is not many years since he was born, part of his childhood is publicly known, through Se & Hør. Alexander Rybak was born May 13th 1986 in a small barrack in the Soviet Union. . His parents were ardent communists, and when the Soviet Union split, and communism disappeared, his parents moved with little Alexander to the second communist country in Europe, Norway. After 48 hours on the truck of the professional driver Pyotr Litshmankov, the family jumped off the truck at Nesodden in Akershus.. His family bought a house under false identity, and changed the name from Рыбак to Rybak, which sounds a bit more norwegian.
Rybak's only asset fom the Soviet Union was a violin he had inherited from his grandfather, who was killed by the Bolsheviks under Vladimir Lenin`s government. Rybak played sad songs on the violin day and night in memory of his grandfather, and it is said that this was one of the reasons why they had to run from the country.

AGING
In Norway, Alexander Rybak got the opportunity to improve himself as a musical talent. The unemployment benefits that his parents received was concentrated entirely on music-school for little Alexander. His music-teachers said several times that he was a genius, and that he was going to be something big.. In 2006, Rybak got a huge chance, and joined Kjempesjansen on NRK. In this program, he sang WHILE he played the violin! This took the audience by storm, and Rybak won overwhelmingly a study grant of 500,000 kroner.
Using the study grant Rybak started to study at the music conservatory in Trondheim,(hihihihi) where he would meet his future wife, Victoria Hairy Tale, often just called Fairytale.. In 2008, Rybak wrote a song about his beloved wife. He called her the Fairy Tale.. (She changed her name in May 2009 to Ingrid Berg Mehus.) This helped him in the Norwegian final of Melodi Grand Prix, where he crushed the other competitors using the gay dance group Frikar.

Rybak was praised for having brought several cultures on the stage - Norwegian folk music, Russian folk music, dancers, gays, a violin and pretty ladies in the background.

Rybak also had an affair with Elisabeth Andreassen, in 2009 , but this is said to have ended when Hairy Tale threatened with divorce.

Some have often pointed out that Rybak has a very long and typically tounge, which has a habit of popping out when Rybak is excited. Thick eyebrows and a black vest is also characteristic of Rybak, who has stated that these have become his trademarks, and anyone who tries to copy his style will be reported to the police.

When Rybak sits down to write new songs, he seeks inspiration from mosquitos, pokemon, Per Sundnes, cute girls and other pests and plagues. Despite that all his songs is about the same thing, everyone loves Alexander Rybak.

Media has also become Rybaks new best friend. To the Media, or "Anders",the typical Norwegian name Rybak has given Media, he speaks openly about all he has to say. Alexander has in fact been told that sometimes it helps to talk to someone. Media is also such a good friend that it writes full reports about him,so Rybak himself (and the entire kingdom) will read it shortly after. “Terribly nice”, is Alexander Rybak`s opinion on that.

On the night of 17th of May 2009 it became clear that Alexander Rybak had won the Eurovision Song Contest with the catchy song about his beloved wife, Fairy Tale. Rybak did not just win, but also received the highest score ever, beating the Finnish monster-band Lordi. Finnish authorities have declared national mourning over the inconvenience. It was just a few very sour countries in Eastern Europe that didn`t give Rybak more than 8, 10 or 12 points.

CONSPIRACIES
At the same time that Alexander Rybak had great success in the context of the Eurovision Song Contest, there are a number of conspiracy theories around him.One of the biggest is that it`s not Alexander who is singing, since it`s physically impossible to sing and play the violin at the same time. The theory has however been rejected by Norwegian Primeminister Jens Stoltenberg, who was proud over more than a rock (Stoltenberg translated to English means something like Proudrock) on this night. He promised to give a few extra hundred Euros on the occasion of the event next year, thanks to Rybak. Also, Russia's president Prime Minister, Vladimir Putin, agrees that this theory must be discarded. But everyone knows that you have to take Putins words with a grain of salt. "

And since we are discussing satire, here's a popular Greek TV satire show, where the host parodied the Greek journalists who harassed Alexander during the ESC. He played a segment with their verbal attacks on him from a rival channel and then he reversed their words against them. Translation impossible.

Alexander Rybak performed at the Red Square in Moscow last month, at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics official brand presentation. Alexander performed the Russian version of the 2009 Eurovision winning entry Fairytale. He performed at the ice ring in Red Square with the backdrop of the Kremlin, in front of an over enthusiastic audience.

Alexander won the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow last May representing Norway. He has gained much fame and recognition in Russia, where he was invited to perform at the special presentation ceremony of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics brand. Never before has a Eurovision winning entry had such a massive impact in Russia like Alexander's Fairytale. The song has been recorded in Russian under the title of Skazka.

Girls have to be protected against me

Alexander Rybak tells us about the erotic novel he found when he was thirteen, and why he is not going to go on being an artist when he finds the right one

At school he liked to believe that he was Superman. But Alexander Rybak looks more like The Phantom Blot when he comes towards us in Torggata. Deep inside a black hood we glimpse a pair of glasses. It is difficult to see the glamour in the creature with the violin suitcase on his back. Very fancy is neither his favourite restaurant, Taste of China, where Alexander eagerly grabs the menue.
- One of these, one of these, one of these and a Cola light, he asks the waiter. Personally we would prefer to eat Alexander, as Idol-judge Tone Lise Skagfoss wanted in 2005. But we are polite enough to follow his recommendation. - Take it like this. It is very hot. Down in the bowl. That's fine. Now mix it with soy sauce. A little more soya sauce, because you might find it a bit hot. Wasn't that good?
17 days after the Tchernobyl disaster i 1986 Alexander was born in Minsk, 290 km. away. His hometown still has radioactive meters at the meat market.
- Many were born with defects there. I thought that what didn't kill me made me strong, he says. Instead of cancer he got a perfect pitch. As one in 10.000 he can recognize tones and keys without any refererance point. - Now I am dreaming about a new CD that is going to be just as simple as the first one. Or perhaps even simpler. The critics expects me to show how clever I am, but i don't bother.
He has an image to keep, but he realizes that he is more than that. That is why he don't vision life as a star in ten years. - Even though the audience has a clear image of me, I am searching. People always ask me how I can top this. That's just daft. You don't ask a bride on her wedding night: How do you top this? It's got to do with realizing that this is one of the greatest moments in life, and having good memories.
In the future he wants to teach and write music for others, like his idol Rolf Løvland. - People think I am jealous when a new talent comes along, that resembles me. But I am the most eager to find new talents. The formula that works for me now cannot last, I don't find it adequately fun. Writing music for others makes me more versatile.
Alexander is not sorry at all for having to practice more than most when growing up. - The practicing thing was just dad who understood that I was good. In Norway kids are raised extremely free. Very few get to be something, because they have been playing all their life. After school the others went home to eachother playing video games, while I went home and practiced.
His mother found school a playground, but Alexander thinks himself that he was good in maths. When he had learned Norwegian fluently, he even got a couple of friends. It got worse at junior high, when he didn't care at all. - I skipped school a lot and said that I would never get used for what I learned there. No one believed me, but I knew what I was going to be. Absolutely.

On TV he has told about being bullyed at school, but now he don't care anymore. That is why he prefers talking about the future and how lucky he is. Neither is he angry with the press in Belarus, as Dagbladet suggested. - Dagbladet exaggerates. It it the big culture and debate-newspaper. They might ask "did he really win ESC?" Please, let the debate go. But the press is allowed to exploit me. I am exploiting the story of that poor girl to sing for all of Europe.
- Who is the poor girl going to exploit then? we ask. - She exploits me right back. She sold our story for a spa weekend at Jessheim.
- Were you really more in love with a fairytale than with her?
- The fairytale was our relationship. We were innocent and had an affair that could have happened only there and then. If we came together now it wouldn't have been the same.
- That's the way things are, he says when he gets to know that the fairytale couple Knut and Siv has separated too. He is very interested to know how the former drug addicts tv-stars are doing, and he has one thing in common with Knut. - It's no easier for me to find a girl to live with. Then I discovered the picture of the author on the back of the book. She was like 80 or something. Then I couldn't think about anything but how she looked. I never finished reading the novel. I am thinking about things that I never should think about. I don't say that I am smart, just that I am thinking a lot.

Here we get to know the real reason why he don't want to continue being an artist in the future. - I cannot go on tour for three months if I have a family. Then I'll most definitely be unfaithful. I am very easily tempted. If there's a bowl with chocolate in the hotel room I just have to take one. That's why I don't buy chocolate.
- But you have a strict self discipline when it comes to practicing?
- Yes, but you can't have such discipline on life. You have to live.

The girls have not always been chasing Alexander. Yet he claims that he is still chasing them. - Girls have to be protected against me. I hire guards to keep me away from girls, he laughs. - Earlier I was a personal trainer. It could be fun being that again, because then I can flirt. I am not professional at all.
- Weren't you supposed to change your carrieer to stay away from the girls?
- I would have to move far away to make that happen. But ask a boy in any age; there will always be one girl that is more important than the others. There is one that makes me feel particularly much joy when I'm with her, but that doesn't mean that she is my girlfriend.

Many are trying to divert girls on their way to Alexander. When we had counted 307 fake Alexander Rybak-profiles on Facebook, we didn't bother to count anymore. - The first few months I thought it was ok with these fake profiles. Then I found out that girls were tricked into a dark corner by them. I have a real profile, but when I add friends they don't believe it's me. In the beginning I added models. Then it was more important stuff: Musicians and people I met on tour. The last one I added is an elderly folk music enthusiast.

Alexander points out that it had to be a belarussian to bring out the genuinely Norwegian in ESC. Or not genuinely, he corrects. - What is funny about folk music is that every nation thinks it's their own. I combine the Norwegian optimism with Russian melancholy. I know many artists that originates from both countries, but they are either for or against. I like mixing everything.

At the home of ESC-general Per Sundnes he was served gay food. He explains the difference between that and hetero food. - It tastes good, but in addition it looks very fancy.

- What was it like coming from Minsk to Nesodden in 1991?
- It was very green. Belarus is greyer and stricter. Now I get VIP-treatment there. What it really means is that I have to give a lot of autographs and photos. And I am invited in to the cockpit by the captain all the time. Which again means that I have to stay and talk with people. But there's often pretty ladies on the plane.
He describes the country as a moderate dictatorship. - If the president passes a reform, like more taxes and better health care, no newspapers are allowed to question it. That would slow down the political process. But nobody has to go to jail for life or anything like that. In Russia the state provides me with bodyguards. Once a maniac with a baseball bat came towards me. He was actually going to get me, but one of the bodyguards pulled him against the wall. There are newspapers that hire such people just to get something to write about.

He is very impressed with the postal service in Oslo, that finds him even if the envelope reads just Alexander and Eurovision. Letters are piling up. - Since the finale I have been to my bachelor flat perhaps 20 days. That doesn't mean spending the night. Now I am replying letters from June. I write by hand, so it's sort of Christmas all year round. The coolest thing is all the children's drawings. That is even better than girls sending pictures.

On an average he goes by plane four times a week, and becomes more and more effective. Now he writes either letters or music on the plane, altough he doesn't call it writing music. - One of the benefits of having perfect pitch is that you don't have to write it down. I have a good musical memory. If I forget a song, it means just that it wasn't very good. I have written more than 300 tunes, and kept 50. Earlier I felt I had to write a journal. I got angry with myself if I didn't write for a month. Now the world is my journal. I have youtube.
Morten Harket has described life as a celebrity with life as a victim of bullying. Alexander agrees. - You are like a monkey in a zoo. You feel like the centre of attention and an outcast at the same time. People don't understand that I cannot smile the same smile 1000 times an hour. Many seems to believe that I walk around the streets smiling, saying hi all the time. But I hardly ever smile.

He cannot understand why people are so interested in the origination of his songs. - Lord of the Rings is my favourite film of all times. It is so good that you forget the world around you. Then I don't bother how they make up the monsters.

He doesn't bother about drinking beer very often either. And when he is invited to a strip club three o'clock at night, he says no thanks, even if he don't mind strip clubs. As a matter of fact he thinks they can salvage families. - Instead of men fancying other women and be unfaithful, they go to a strip club.
- Have you ever had use for a strip club?
- No, but perhaps I will. I'd rather finish that kind of life, but then I'd have to marry rather late.

At the time being he don't want to cancel any concert at all. - My management cancelled a concert in Sweden because I was invited to a larger TV-show in Germany. They thought it was fine by me, but I got really pissed off.

His work ethic let out minds go to Michael Jackson, and Alexander becomes almost as eager as when talking about girls. - Michael was very clever. @Julia, Zanya: I have tried to write a translation from the Opera Concert - there are translations in several languages including russian on the dvd - but you can have this while you wait.It's partly the english sub texts and partly mine.(because sometimes I think the translation on dvd looses some of the subtleties of what is said.)..

A: Like a lot of my other projects, the last thing I think of is having a ‘red thread’. I would like to have everything that I can fit into this project, even if it is not relevant for my genre. This show incorporates a lot af genres.

FUNNY LITTLE WORLD

A: I am classical trained, and I am first and foremost a classical musician. I think all classical musicians have great respect for Arve Tellefsen. He is one of the few who tries to keep classical music available to regular people so everyone can get access, it shouldn’t be just ‘high cultural’. Here Arve Tellefsen has done a great contribution, and additionally he is extremely charming – and of course he is an amazing violinist. It’s rare, but sometimes one person can just accomplish that. He has taken one genre and created something new – and he has really been an inspiration for me to continue with the violin for all that it’s worth.

A: When you’re young and playing an instrument, it is great to have someone to look up to – and it is especially great when this person is Norway’s national treasure! I am of course talking of Arve Tellefsen!

Steven Ackels: Alexander called me and asked if it would be wise to do’ Melodi Grand Prix’. (Laila: The Norwegian part of ESC)
First time I took part, I got so many artists calling me to say it could be damaging for my career. I’ve done it three times, it has never been a problem, and it has been nothing but fun. I told Alexander: ‘If you really believe in your song - and you wouldn’t have called me if you didn’t – then do it’. So I heard the song and I told him:’You know – this will win the whole thing! Not just the Norwegian, but the international final!’ He said he didn’t believe that, but he just hoped he would do ok. And then he won the lot. Amazing!
