Mentor meeting

The joy of meeting again was great when Alexander Rybak (24) yesterday went to the Peer Gynt play to see his old mentor, Dennis Storhøi (50).

It is just before Grieg's "Morning Mood" starts coming out of the speakers, and the rowboats on the Gålå Lake are approaching land. Surrounded by incredible natural splendour an excited Alexander Rybak is backstage.
- I'm here to see my favourite actor and mentor, he says about the guy with fresh make-up, who comes over and gives him a hug.
- Mentor is a big word, states Dennis Storhøy flattered.
- But if you can contribute something to young people it's just nice. In particular, a multi-talent like Alexander.

Incredible chemistry
Rybak tells about how Storhøi took him under his wing when they played in "Fiddler on the Roof" at Oslo Nye theatre in 2007.
- I'm no actor, but Dennis made me feel like one. He taught me that it is possible. If you have the right people around you, you manage to get out more aspects of yourself.
- How was it working with Alexander at the time?
- It was six weeks with question marks in our eyes!
Both laughs.
- But around the time of the first rehearsal with an audience, both of us understood what the director meant. Alexander played my thoughts, and I spoke them. And after that we had one hundred performances with an incredible chemistry, says Storhøi.

Good Chemistry
The experienced actor got to know how important that chemistry was, one evening when Rybak's arm was stiff, and he had to cancel right before the show.
- I missed him terribly. The way he was playing my thoughts suited what I was saying so incredibly well, so when he was gone, it was very difficult, Storhøi explains.
After the "Fiddler on the Roof", the two kept close contact. Not at least because the almost legendary wilful Rybak also feel that he needs guidance now and then.
- Dennis is the one I ask for advice. It's him I'm calling or sending SMS when I need it, Rybak says.
One of these SMSes he sent 15 minutes before going on stage in Moscow 16th May last year.
- And I thought only: "Are you crazy?", Storhøi laughs.
- But we talked more together before the Norwegian final. I just asked Alexander to give of his joy and surplus energy. If you are having fun at work it is contagious.

Inspired in summer
Rybak says that Storhøi in 2007 said it would only take a couple of years before the youngster's career stretched beyond the country's borders.
- But one year passed by, and then one and a half... And I wondered "what is he talking about?".
- What is the most important thing you learned from Dennis?
- He taught me how to save energy. If you look at Dennis he is calm and in control - but then, on stage, he will glow. This is something I have learned from him - to save my energy until it is needed.
- You have at times struggled with having used too much energy?
- With me it goes up and down, as with all others. It's just that unlike everyone else I get mine in the newspapers.
- You feel better now?
- Oh yes, but it is summer. I always get more inspiration in the summer.
