I was always obsessed with song lyrics. I remember myself when «Sebe Allah y’é» by Alpha Blondy was played everywhere and I was asking what language was that and what the lyrics meant. I was not satisfied when people did not share my curiosity. What if those lyrics were calling me bad names? Nevertheless, I found that the lyrics were written in the Dioula African language and contained the creed of Islam, among others.

At least, Eurovision has shown me that incomprehensible lyrics are not exclusively a Greek trend and songs don’t need to be written in Nigerian, if you want them to not make sense. English can do that pretty well.

Have you noticed the lyrics of «Fairytale», the song that has shaken Europe at the ESC of 2009?

Years ago when I was younger
I kinda liked a girl I knew
She was mine and we were sweethearts
That was then, but then it’s true

- “Years ago when I was younger”: so we aren’t talking about fresh stuff here!
- “I kinda liked a girl I knew”: certainly that doesn’t sound romantic or passionate
- “She was mine and we were sweethearts”: big deal!
- “That was then, but then it’s true”

Can someone tell me how this cold mood matches this hot outbreak of the chorus?

“I’m in love with a fairytale even though it hurts
‘Cause I don’t care if I lose my mind I’m already cursed”

Oh yes! He is in love with a Fairytale. Apparently he doesn’t mean “The wolf and the seven little goats”, he means that he is in love with an illusion. Well, the way he found to express that really sucks! Second: are we sure he’s talking about the same girl from the previous stanza? Because he only «kinda liked» her. What else could we expect from him if he was mad about her?

“Every day we started fighting
Every night we fell in love”

That apparently means they were falling in love every night from the beginning. “I fall in love”, “I am in love” and “I make love” are not exactly the same, and something tells me that the author didn’t want to place the verb “fell” before “love”.

The rest of doesn’t make much sense either.

“No one else could make me sadder
But no one else could lift me high above
I don’t know what I was doing
When suddenly we fell apart
Nowadays I cannot find her
But when I do we’ll get a brand new start”

First: “fall apart” doesn’t mean “break up” but “break into pieces”. To use it for a break up is outrageously mushy. Second: the repetition of “fall” rather exposes the poor English of the lyricist.

I know, it was not worth the time I spent on it.

Come to think of it, the Greek winning song «My Number One» by Helena Paparizou didn’t make more sense either, but at least it wasn’t written in Pirate English.
